Brian Nicolas Unruh
Potter and Ceramic Artist
I'm Brian Nicolas Unruh, and I'm deeply immersed in the world of pottery and ceramics. My journey as an artist began in Wichita, Kansas, where I found my passion for clay in the art magnet program at Northeast Magnet High School. Among the various forms of artistic expression, ceramics quickly became my medium of choice. The allure of the potter's wheel, with its mesmerizing dance of creation, drew me in, and I've been captivated ever since.
From the moment I laid hands on clay, I knew I had found my calling. My early experiences with handbuilding and the art of the pottery wheel opened up a world of creative possibilities. The tactile sensation of clay between my fingers, the process of molding it into diverse shapes, and the meditative rhythm of the wheel all spoke to me in a profound way.
As I honed my skills, I discovered that pottery wasn't just about crafting functional pieces; it was a form of meditation and self-discovery. The act of centering clay mirrored my own need for balance and mindfulness. This connection between my hands, mind, and the clay led to an intimate and transformative artistic process.
Throughout my journey, I've encountered personal challenges and triumphs that have fueled my creativity. My experiences have shaped me into the artist I am today. I turned to art therapy during a pivotal time, finding solace and healing in the process. This led me back to pottery, reigniting a passion I thought I had lost.
Drawing from my Colombian heritage and diverse life adventures, my work is a fusion of cultures and emotions. I'm inspired by the simplicity of rural Colombian pottery and the utilitarian nature of functional art. Crafting each piece is an intimate dialogue, where I infuse every curve and contour with intention and care.
My background spans various industries, from restaurants and the cycling world to accounting and software development. These diverse experiences have enriched my creative process, adding unique perspectives to my art. The combination of resilience, transformation, and dedication resonates in every piece I create.
My ultimate aspiration is to forge connections through my art—connections that go beyond the physical piece. I want each of my creations to evoke emotions, spark conversations, and become an integral part of people's lives. Through pottery, I'm weaving a story that celebrates beauty, simplicity, and the enduring power of the artistic journey.
So, when you hold a piece of my pottery, I hope you feel the passion, care, and dedication that went into its creation. It's my way of sharing a piece of my journey with you and enriching your life with art that's not only beautiful but deeply meaningful.
